DATURA PRIVATE STREET
DEVELOPMENT PROPOSED

PPROPOSAL BEFORE CITY
PLANNING BOARD

A developer proposal to redevelop a 1.25 acre parcel at 2338 Datura St. is working its way through the city approval process but has met with some resistance from neighbors as well as the City Planning Board.

The parcel was originally 2 parcels with one on Datura and the second parcel off the street and accessed by a driveway to Datura.  These structures were razed in 2016 and now this proposal has been made.

The request for a private street was necessitated by the desire to allow access to a subdivided 4 parcels.

The concerns around the development are in regard to storm runoff , the size of the cup de sac and the removal of trees.  The Planning Board will meeting on the issue again on March 9.

ADDRESSING TEMPLE ST TRAFFIC CIRCLE

APNA WORKING WITH CITY TO RESTORE DILAPIDATED TRAFFIC CIRCLE

The City of Sarasota has installed irrigation and cleared the weeds at the School Ave/Temple St traffic circle to support new plantings.  Members of the APNA Board are working with City staff to improve this now dilapidated circle in regard to what can be planted there per city standards.  The City will maintain the circle as they do with the new, larger circles on US 41.  We look forward to turning this unsightly patch around!

5G CELL SERVICE COMING TO ARLINGTON PARK!

NEW CELL TOWER INSTALLATION HAS BEGUN

New Verizon 5G towers are beginning to show up in our neighborhood and they might take some getting used to.  The first one installed is shown above at the corner of Prospect and Tamiami.  A second tower has also been erected on the 2200 block of Arlington St.  The locations were determined at a federal level so as to optimize the performance of cell service.

APARTMENT PROJECT
PROPOSAL
SURFACES AGAIN

FORMER SITE OF
DOCTOR'S HOSPITAL TARGETED
FOR REDEVELOPMENT

The mostly abandoned site of the former Doctor's Hospital and its 5 story parking ramp is once again the subject of an apartment proposal.  A previous proposal was pulled by the developer last year.  The new proposal has no site plan as yet but addresses some neighborhood concerns of the last project while also looking to construct more units, 250-280 with some potentially being 'affordable'.  The new proposal has no medical clinic as the previous one did and allows for no ingress or egress onto Briggs or Prospect.  Representatives of the project have reached out to the APNA Board to discuss concerns.  We will propose they make a presentation to membership and listen to commentary.  Stay tuned.

SPEED BUMPS REFRESHED IN Arlington Park

APNA AND CITY WORKED TOGETHER TO IDENTIFY INEFFECTIVE SPEED CONTROL

Many speed bumps across Arlington Park leave much to be desired and the APNA is facilitating improvement.  Over the years the speed control bumps have flattened and lost their effectiveness.  Working with the City of Sarasota the Arlington Park Neighborhood Association provided a list of dilapidated speed bumps and they were replaced.  We are providing them with another list so expect to see more improvements.

CONSIDERING A SAFE AND BEAUTIFUL NORTH/SOUTH ROUTE

APNA AND CITY DISCUSSING THE DESIRABILITY OF THE CITY'S LONG RANGE CONNECTIVITY PLAN

For several years the City of Sarasota has considered extending an existing Multi Use Recreational Trail (MURT) north that exists between Webber St. and Siesta Dr.  With the construction of the Legacy Trail to the north and east of Arlington Park, connectivity to this new County amenity is being discussed.  See tab above for additional information as well as a drone view.
